Artificial intelligence, digitalisation, and digital twin technologies have led to many recent advancements. But many more developments are waiting to be discovered and implemented in various sectors. The EU-funded SmartWins project (“Boosting Research for a Smart and Carbon Neutral Built Environment with Digital Twins”) aims to assist the KTU university’s Sustainable Energy in the Built Environment research group. Relying on research and cooperation with leading energy companies and universities, the project aims to discover novel ways to high-quality research on the topic of next generation digital twins, applied for allowing the transition to a smart, sustainable, resilient and carbon neutral built environment. It will result in improving the research excellence of the university.

 

Build 2050

The main objective of BUILD2050 is to contribute to improve the construction, renovation and operation of healthy and sustainable buildings at European level through the development of an integrated and transnational training. The specific objectives are: (1) Create transversal skills in the building sector knowledge for emerging challenges through an integrated training composed of 8 courses aimed at students and professionals; (2) Foster the sharing of innovative knowledge and challenges through the creation of a network of European partners in the building sector (entrepreneurs, researchers, municipalities); (3) Promote the response to the challenges in building sector through the creation of a platform with the compilation of the information generated in the training by the trainers, trainees and associated partners; (4) Promote new forms of education through the sharing of experience / methodology of creating integrated and transnational training through a European Guide on Advanced Training for Build2050.

Improvement of the analysis and building of energy and emission scenarios to support the definition and assessment of policies for the reduction of emissions of pollutants and GHG

The activities fall within an agreement between Politecnico and ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale) for common research interests related to environmental protection, climate change mitigation and sustainable development, in order to adopt a shared strategy and an efficient use of resources. In particular, the goal of the acitivities is the improvement of the analysis and building of energy and emission scenarios to support the definition and assessment of policies for the reduction of emissions of pollutants and green-house gases. The work has three different focuses: (i) analysis of efficiency and flexibility offered by electric vehicles and related emissions; (ii) analysis of temporal profiles of thermal energy consumption in the civil sector and estimation of potential penetration of new technologies; (iii) study of the technological options enabling an improvement of efficiency and flexibility of final energy uses in the industrial sector.

 

Circular Housing

The main objective of the project is the definition and validation of circular and regenerative economy experiments for a large number of households identifying a sustainable and less carbon-intensive replicable business model able to scale up rapidly (starting form a sample of 100 apartments up to 10,000). The project aims to: i) the definition and implementation of a deep behavioural and market change for a large number of households; ii) innovation in circular furniture and appliances mix, in business model to act as a catalyser for the entire market; iii) offer an innovative service to the tenants that includes the renting of all the housing appliances and furniture fully circular (in Italy there are not furnished apartments for rent); iv) redesign the economic systems around these products avoiding waste generation and promoting behaviours that embrace circularity (in all assets lifecycle). The project includes the definition of an innovative business model, the definition of the role of actors in each phase of the asset life.

 

Made Green in Italy – Grana Padano DOP

Evaluation of the potential of efficient district heating network on the Italian territory including new generation systems using waste and renewable heat sources

Accelerating investments on district energy in Tunisia – District Energy in cities Initiative

Milan Zero Carbon Fund (MZCF)

The project Milan Zero Carbon Fund (MZCF) aimed to define an innovative financial instrument for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the city of Milan through the implementation of urban renovation projects and in particular de-carbonization of the real estate sector. The project involves the development of a feasibility study analyzing: i) the governance of the fund, ii) the calculation methodology for assessing the potential impacts on climate change (CO2e emissions) linked to the construction of new buildings iii) identification of potential emissions compensation solutions to be implemented within the Municipality of Milan.

 

4GDH – Analysis on new models for 4GDH in Italy: an innovative tool for the fast integration of the RES sources

The consortium led by the Politecnico di Milano aims to explore and confirm the opportunity to develop a regulatory framework designed to disseminate the fourth generation district heating systems (4GDH) in Italy, which have the potential to generate an impact significant for the decarbonisation of Italian cities. The project is defined with the participation of key actors (ARERA, City of Milan and Lombardy Region, MISE and MATTM) and will allow the collaborate with the project consortium (A2A, POLIMI) in a structured way. The goal is to evaluate the definition of a new regulatory, legislative, socio-economic model for the application of 4GDH in Italy, testing, in a first phase, the application in the city of Milan.

 

Deep demonstrations of healthy and Clean Cities – Milan (DDMI)

The project co-ordinated by the Municipality of Milan provides for the involvement of AMAT, the Politecnico di Milano, Poliedra and a network of experts in the following sectors: investment planning (Bankers without Bounderies), community involvement (Democratic Society), business socioeconomic case (Material Economics) and political innovation (Dark Matter). The DDMI aims to accelerate the path of de-carbonization for the city of Milan and its citizens with a view to transforming the urban fabric with “zero CO2e emissions” in 2050, more resilient and healthier.
In 2019, with the strong involvement of the stakeholder community (city authorities, regional bodies, national public administrations, financial institutions, property developers, academia, etc.), the multi-year activity plan and the “pilot” experimentation areas were identified (deep restructuring, fourth generation district heating – 4GDH, nature based solutions – NBS).

Merezzate+

The project aims to demonstrate a new city model based on the concept of “intelligent urban ecosystems”. The innovative approach is tested in the residential complex called Redo Milano (Rogoredo / Santa Giulia), designed to become a laboratory-district to co-develop, test and implement innovative actions and practices of urban sustainability on a local scale to reduce gas emissions greenhouse and environmental impacts and together, strengthen social inclusion.
The intervention involves the construction of approximately 800 apartments, of which 615 dedicated to social housing which will be developed by REDO SGR S.p.A. – Benefit Company,
a third part of the project. As part of the project, an integrated series of measures will be co-designed, implemented and monitored in the following thematic strands:
– Clean energy
– Sustainable mobility
– Circular economy
The best practices tested in the context of Merezzate will be used to define guidelines on the potential transferability and replicability of the model in other contexts, regarding other areas of Milan and other European cities. a laboratory for the integration of clean energy, sustainable mobility and circular economy.


 

i-GAP: italian + innovative + intelligent + impacting Gas Absorption Heat Pump

The i-GAP project aims to develop a gas driven heat pump suitable for the residential market (small size), ready to be produced in series and easy to be integrated into the building system. For this purpose, various activities are carried out in the i-GAP project, which aim to: (1) develop and industrialize the components of the gas heat pump; (2) develop systems to integrate the heat pump with the heating system; (3) develop a user-friendly control system; (4) demonstrate the benefits of this technology through pilot cases; (5) estimate the potential impact of the gas heat pump for the end user and at the national energy system level.

 

Ecotest

The ECOTEST project is funded by CEN within the framework of the revision of the European Standards for testing space heating and water heaters, with specific focus on the products which fall under the energy labelling and Ecodesign Directives (EU) No. 811/12/13/14 2013. Within the project, which involves the main European laboratories, a co-normative work will be carried out, with the purpose of verifying the applicability, reproducibility and repeatability of the testing procedures. In particular, Round Robin Tests (i.e. tests on the same product in different laboratories) will take pace to identify whether the current testing procedure require adjustment and to bring the proposed changes to the relevant standardization tables.

The LIFE The tough get going project (LIFE TTGG) aims to improve the entire life cycle efficiency of European Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheeses (from cradle to grave approach) by designing and developing a software to calculate and reduce the product environmental footprint. The software will be calibrated, validated and tested on the companies of the Grana Padano and Comté supply chain.

LabelPackA+ – Promotion and support to the implementation of the energy labelling for Space, Combi Heaters and Water Heaters with a focus on the “Package label”

MIF – Mediterranean Investment Facility – Egypt

The project aims to encourage the penetration of renewable energy sources into the Egyptian national energy mix, in order to create an internal market for low-emission technologies, which can also be accessed by companies in the Italian system operating in this sector.
Realized in collaboration with the Environment Program of the United Nations (UN Environment) and the Egyptian Ministry of Housing foresees the realization of the following activities:
1) Energy analysis and state of the art of technologies: the purpose of this component is to provide a detailed reference framework on energy issues, also in terms of potential and future developments of low emission technologies.
2) Promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency in buildings in order to encourage the diffusion and use of solar thermal energy and the reduction of energy consumption for cooling in buildings (both public and private), the definition of regulatory tools, legislative and technical-financial measures accompanied by capacity building, training and the construction of a “demonstration” building.
3) Creation of a financing mechanism for the promotion of renewable technologies and efficiency in the residential sector (public and private): the creation of financing mechanisms for the promotion of renewable technologies and efficiency in the residential sector (public and private).

 

Heat4Cool – Integration of advanced technologies for heating and cooling at building and district level

The Heat4Cool concept proposes innovative, efficient and cost-effective solutions that support EU energy efficiency policies through an optimal integration of relevant rehabilitation systems. The project develops, integrates and demonstrates an easy to install and highly energy efficient solution for building retrofitting. The process that begins from the Heat4Cool advanced decision-making tool, (which addresses the building and district characteristics ) and leads to the optimal solution. Heat4cool will implement four benchmark retrofitting projects in four different European climates, aiming to achieve a reduction of at least 20% in energy consumption in a technically, socially, and financially feasible manner and is expected to demonstrate a return on investment lower than ten years.

 

Polysmart – Polygeneration with advanced small and medium scale thermally driven air-conditioning and refrigeration technology

Key goal of the proposed project is to support the development of a new market for polygeneration: small and medium capacity trigeneration. The operating time of a CHP system can be significantly increased by using the heat for thermally driven cooling and thereby a remarkable improvement of cost efficiency is achieved. Therefore, the proposed integrated project aims to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness and reliability of small-scale combined heat, cooling and power (CHCP) units for a wide range of buildings and industrial applications. Key actors in the project are the majority of today’s manufacturers of thermally driven cooling machines in Europe and manufacturers of CHP systems.
Furthermore the consortium includes utilities, engineering consultants, energy agencies, end-users and research institutions. 8 demonstration sub-projects using different thermally driven cooling technologies at 13 sites in 8 European countries for a wide spectrum of applications will be carried out as a main activity.

Med Desire – Mediterranean development of support schemes for solar initiatives and renewable energies

Med Desire was an EC-funded project (in the framework of ENPI-CBC MED program) which aims at introducing financial mechanisms and legal ordinances for promoting solar technologies in Egypt. Relab group supported the Italian Ministry for Enviroment, Land and Sea (partner of the project) in the implementation of solar ordinances-related activities. The main role of Relab was to identify end-users suitable for undergoing legal provisions for solar technologies, draft the technical part of a future solar ordinance, prepare the framework for implementation of the ordinance (training, awareness raising etc).

Casablanca – Solar Thermal technologies for Casablanca hospital

The project, financed through the Moroccan agency for energy conservation (AMEE) by the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea, aimed at designing and installing solar water heaters for the Casablanca hospital, where some buildings were not equipped with water heaters. The role of Relab group was to estimate the energy demand, pre-size all systems, support AMEE in the preparation and issuing of the call for tenders, check compliance of solar water heaters with technical specifications of the tender. Furthermore, an innovative solar cooling system for Mediterranean climates will be sized, installed and monitored at AMEE premises in Marrakech.

 

Cubis – combined heat and power plant using biomass and solar energy

The general objective of the CUBIS project was to identify the best way of integrating a solar thermal system with a biomass boiler for the heat input of an ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) engine for the production of electricity and an absorption machine for the production of cold.
The project involved the construction of a pilot plant consisting of a biomass boiler of 150 kW, a solar thermal system of 100 kWth and an appropriate system of heat storage.

HEAT4U is an industry led project whose main objective is to develop a Gas Adsorption Heat Pump (GAHP) solution to allow a cost-effective use of renewable energy in existing residential building for heating and DHW services. The project conceived to overcome a number of technological and non-technological barriers which currently prevent GAHP application in single family houses or small multy-storey buildings. HEAT4U main objectives are (1) the development of appliance with specifications suitable for the residential market (2) its integration in existing heating and DHW architectures (3) the development of a decision support system, enabling the optimal design in different building operating conditions (4) Dissemination activity to promote the awareness of the benefits of the GAHP technology (5) the demonstration of the technology in 5 real cases.

 

Prosol industrie

Prosol Industrie aimed at evaluating feasibility of solar thermal technologies in industrial processes. Six industrial facilities were analysed (textile and food and beverage sector) and the cost-benefit of installing solar thermal systems was evaluated. It is expected that based on economic results a proposal for an innovative subsidy mechanism will be developed and proposed to the Tunisian government.

The SOLAIR project promoted the market implementation of small and medium-sized solar air-conditioning appliances with a focus on the residential as well as commercial sector and the combination of domestic hot water supply and space heating with air-conditioning. SOLAIR intends to resolve major market obstacles – such as the lack of awareness, know-how and coherent information – through market surveys, capacity building, qualification and promotion for stakeholders and investors.

 

Solera – Integrated small scale solar heating and cooling systems for a sustainable air-conditioning of buildings

The project aimed to develop highly integrated solar heating and cooling systems for small and medium capacity applications which are easily installed and economically and socially sustainable. The envisioned applications were residential houses, small office buildings and hotels. The goal was to use the excess solar heat in summer to power a thermally driven cooling process in order to provide cooling for air-conditioning.

 

High Combi – High solar fraction heating and cooling systems with combination of innovative components  and methods

The main aim of the project was to examine, through research work and demonstration plants operation, the technical and financial feasibility of high solar fraction heating and cooling plants. The combination of heat pumps with solar thermal systems was of a great interest for various research groups (e.g. in several IEA tasks) and it has been already successfully introduced into the market. In such a complex combination, in which solar cooling was also included, various design, optimisation and control problems arise.

MEDISCO aimed to develop, test and optimise solar thermally driven cooling concepts for the food and agro industry in the Mediterranean region, which under local conditions can become economically and socially sustainable. The objective was to asses which systems would better suite the actual and future demand of the food and conservation industry sectors in the south edge of the basin and estimate in technical and economical terms the most appropriate approach for the application of solar thermally driven systems. The partners will carry out a survey of the energy requirement of the industrial sector analysed in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.

 

Solnet – Advanced solar heating and cooling for buildings

The proposed EST-network SOLNET consisted of nine university research groups from seven different European countries and several commercial enterprises, working in the fields of civil, mechanical, and environmental engineering, as well as architecture and chemistry. Ten PhD projects were carried out in the framework of SOLNET. The common scope of the research activities was to lay the foundations for a new generation of solar heating and cooling systems with a high solar fraction.
